Hashima was home to 5,259 people at its 1959 peak, the highest population density ever recorded on Earth. Today, the entire island is a designated cultural property under national protection, and the Nagasaki municipal government restricts access to preserve the crumbling concrete structures and prevent accidents on unstable ground. Visiting Hashima Island requires booking with one of five licensed operators who hold permits from the Nagasaki Port Authority. Each tour departs from Tokiwa Terminal or Motofuna Pier, sails for approximately 50 minutes, and allows 30 to 45 minutes on a designated path covering roughly 10 percent of the island's surface. The viewing route includes the former coal mine entrance, a section of the apartment blocks, and the primary school ruins. You cannot enter buildings or deviate from the marked walkway. Tour guides provide context in Japanese, with English audio headsets available on select boats. Weather dependency is the single largest variable. Operators assess sea conditions at dawn and cancel sailings if waves exceed one meter at the island's pier. Passengers receive full refunds for operator cancellations, but tours booked through third-party platforms may have different refund policies. Spring and early summer offer the most stable conditions, while autumn brings frequent cancellations. Winter tours operate sporadically. The facility usage fee is collected on the boat before landing, paid in cash or by card depending on the operator. Hashima served as a coal mining facility for Mitsubishi from 1890 until closure in 1974, when undersea reserves depleted and petroleum replaced coal as Japan's primary energy source. The island's reinforced concrete apartment towers, built to withstand typhoons, are deteriorating at an accelerating rate due to salt corrosion and are expected to collapse within the next two decades. Preservation funding remains limited, and access rules may tighten as structural assessments continue.
